Increase in rabies in raatwaschers in Estrie and Montérégie

Cases of rabies among raatwaschers have jumped in the last months in the regions of Estrie and Montérégie.

In total, 17 cases have been detected in Quebec since December 2024.

To curb the propagation, the Ministry of the Environment, the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks is launching a vaccination operation.

To prevent the virus from spreading more and that a human has been reached, this operation must be carried out. It consists in immunizing raccoons, skipsticks and foxes against rabies. To do this, agents spread the pockets that resemble a sachet of green ketchup.

Over the next two weeks, seven teams will travel a territory of 1100 p km2 in different municipalities between Estrie and Montérégie. 75,000 vaccine baits will be manually placed near the woods, watercourses and agricultural areas.

These capsules are in no way harmful to your pets and do not hurt wild beasts.

You too have a role to play! If you suspect that a raccoon has rage by its paralyzed look, abnormally nasty, lethargic or dead, it should be noted to the competent authorities. Also important not to move harmful wild animals so as not to enlarge the contamination territory.
