The discord bridge will partially reopen in car traffic

The Nantes metropolis announces the reopening – partial and temporary – from the Anne -de -Bretagne bridge to cars in early July. Other closure phases are nevertheless scheduled before the end of the of the work in 2027.

A delay in reinforcement. Closed for a year in car traffic, the Anne-de-Bretagne bridge, in the center of Nantes (Loire-Atlantique) did not reopened to cars in April 2025, as previously announced by the services of the metropolis. This prolonged closure of the work, which has been looming since the end of winter, to the chagrin of traders and users, should nevertheless come to an end in July. Or rather start to get to an end, since this partial reopening to automotive traffic of the future broader European bridge will only be done in one direction.

The book should become accessible to cars from July 7, in the South-North direction, Nantes-Métropole announced on April 25 in a press release. This partial reopening is made possible by the next completion of the work carried out since 2024 on Boulevard Léon Bureau, on the island of Nantes. The two years of upcoming work will however still be marked by several closure phases of the bridge.

Compensated merchants

As the metropolis specifies, a second total interruption in automotive traffic will be imposed again next year, from May to September 2026, before a return to a partial opening. A total reopening of traffic is scheduled between March 2027 and the summer period. A final closure will still take place between the summer of 2027 and the delivery of the bridge in September 2027. The commissioning of the tram lines will take place in the fall, after the completion of the work. Except for delay.

On the facing this site thrown on the two banks of the Loire, the traders of the quays and the island of Nantes were worried, in March with the lack of visibility concerning the precise of the work. Many companies have accused a significant drop in their turnover. The metropolis has set up a system of compensation for professionals injured by the work. At the end of April, the amount of aid paid since the start of the site amounted to more than 919,000 euros. At the end of February, only 19 companies had benefited from these compensation. “It is not very wonderful, when you know that there are nearly 200 traders on the perimeter”then entrusted to Figaro Éléonore Kurtz, president of the association of traders of the Quai de la Fosse.

The enlargement works of the Anne-de-Bretagne bridge, which links the island of Nantes to the center of the city of the Dukes, aim to span the Loire with two new tram lines, supposed to be inaugurated at the end of 2027. According to the metropolis, the new work will benefit at least 70,000 users wishing to connect the north and the south of the agglomeration, in particular the district of the new CHU strong population growth of the community. Designed like a garden bridge, the work will be – as before – always accessible to pedestrians and cyclists.
