The municipal council of Biarritz (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), meeting on Monday May 5 in the evening, officially voted to rename the street of “La Négresse”, at the origin of a judicial conflict between the Basque municipality and an association dedicated to the history of colonization, in the street of “the joy”, reports “here Basque Country” (ex-France Bleu).
This vote took place by secret bulletin around 6.30 p.m. Monday: 25 elected officials voted for the repeal of the initial name, six voted against, while two abstained. A little later, a second vote took place to endorse the result of the citizen consultation and rename the street. In mid-April, the inhabitants had been called to choose between three new names. The “Rue de l’Aglegress” had won with 50.49% of the votes of 2,018 voters.
On February 6, the Administrative Court of Appeal (CAA) of Bordeaux had granted a request from the association Memoirs et Sharing, by giving three months to the municipality Biarrote to repeal a deliberation of 1986 which had appointed the rue de “La Negresse”. The magistrates had judged that this appellation, denounced as “racist and sexist” by the applicant association, was “likely to harm the dignity of the human person”.
