Fernando Alonso claims not to be “tired” to struggle at the wheel of Formula 1 not competitive.
Since it has become the youngest consecutive F1 world champion in 2006, after its 2005 title, the Spaniard has struggled to obtain regular successes. He is now behind the wheel of what he admits to being either the slowest car, or the second largest on the set.
In fact, the 43 -year -old man, under contract until the end of next year – when he will pilot the first Aston Martin of Adrian Newey – has still not scored a single point in 2025.
“I hope that for Imola, we can take a step forward, which is necessary now,” he confides.
“When will there be performance improvements? I don’t know. Because if new parts arrive, they will also arrive for other teams. We cannot talk about Aston Martin improvements as if the others were resting.”
“Everyone will bring aerodynamic packages to Imola, so we will try to ensure that ours is the most efficient. But hey, that’s how it is.”
Alonso was then asked if he was “tired” to run at the wheel of Formula 1 which are clearly below his talent.
“No, that doesn’t tire me,” insisted Alonso. “If I had been tired, I would not have reached the SQ3 (Friday).”
The question was then reformulated to ask him if the series of uncompetitive races of this season affected him in any way.
“It doesn’t tire me,” he repeated, “Because at the start of the year, I already know that there are 24 races where it is normal not to score points and stay out of the Q1. So, when I finish 11th in Japan and that I come before the press to say that it was one of my best races, really special, and that you interpret my message badly, the message is: ‘How is an 11th place a really special race?’”
“The answer is that I know that a 11th place, an Q3, is an exceptional performance, in my opinion with the F1 that I have. And then, these small objectives that we set ourselves every weekend to go beyond what is logical, it really motivates me.”
