George Russell does not think that McLaren F1 will continue to make mistakes which, for the moment, allow him to stay in contact. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are, according to the Mercedes driver, the big favorites for the rest of the season.
“I would like to say that it is feasible, but you have seen that the McLaren, in the hands of the good pilots, does the work, and that it is for the moment clearly above everyone” explained Russell, almost already resigned for the title.
“We had predicted, before Bahrain, that Bahrain would probably be their best scenario, but then we went to China with very low and very cold temperatures, we could have said that it was their worst scenario, and they still made the pole and won the race.”
“We find ourselves in a position where we are 40 points behind them in the championship, probably because of their mistakes rather than because of the pure performance of the car, and we could say that this car was able to do the double in each race since the start of the year.”
“And so far, obviously, Max has won a race, we have had a second place, and we are in a way in this struggle, but I cannot imagine that these small errors will continue to occur for 24 races.”
Andrea Kimi Antonelli will discover Djeddah this weekend and it is impatient to pilot on this rapid urban circuit: “It will be very fast, very exciting too. This track is intense, and it will be necessary to find the right pace in EL1 to launch the weekend in a good way, but we are impatient to be there”
“It was the most difficult race of the season so far, several things have not turned in our favor. We saw what we should have done better, and the approach is very different in terms of tire management so I learned well and I hope a good weekend.”
“Bahrain was a good step forward in qualifying, I was more comfortable with the situation, by attacking more and more, and a little too much at the start of Q3. But here it is a real urban circuit and it will be a little different behind the wheel of an F1 compared to the F2, but there is no reason why we cannot fight for a good position.”
