It is the nightmare that haunts all young mothers. An infant died, on the night of Monday to Tuesday, in Nanterre, in an apartment on avenue du Maréchal Joffre, probably suffocated. It is the inert body and the cyanose face that the 16-day newborn was discovered by his mother who, according to the first elements of the investigation, had fallen asleep by his side.
He was shortly after 2:30 am when the mother of the child, a 35 -year -old woman, alerted the emergency services, explaining that her baby was no longer breathing. “The resuscitation attempts have remained in vain,” says a police source. The infant was declared who died on site at 3:15 am. »»
To the police, warned by the emergency services, the woman explained that she installed the child in her bed to breastfeed him, around 10:30 p.m. “The mother and the baby would then be asleep,” says the same source. But in her sleep, it is possible that she suffocated him with the weight of her body ”. At this stage, however, all hypotheses remain envisaged, including that of the sudden death of the infant.
The Nanterre prosecutor’s office opened an investigation “for the purpose of the causes of death”. Examination and the autopsy of the newborn are planned as part of this survey, entrusted to the Hauts-de-Seine territorial security brigade.
Sharing the same bed as her baby is a practice called “cododo” or “co-seeping”. In France, it is debated because it would promote the sudden death of infants or falls, when the security rules are not respected. The High Authority for Health (HAS) thus recommends that young parents sleep in the same room as their baby during the first 6 months of infant life but advocates however to opt for separate beds. The HAS thus recalls that “the newborn should be systematically lying on the back in a suitable bed”. Apart from our borders, the Canadian Pediatric Society is also advised by bed sharing.
