“Convallaria Majalis” is the botanical name of lily of the valley in Latin. “Kielo” is the name of the Muguet in Finnish. You will be able to shine at the table this May 1, because many of us ignore that lily of the valley is the symbol flower of this northern European country long by 1,160 km, with a maximum width of approximately 540 km.
Lily of the valley has been the national flower since 1982. With its long strong stems, its white bells like snow, it is a strong emblem of the identity of the 5.6 million Finns.
In Finland, we find the clusters of small white flowers both on wooded and humid land and in the parks and gardens of practically the whole country. Lily of the valley grows abundantly throughout the country. Its white and scented bells symbolize the beginning of the Nordic summer, a long -awaited period after the long Finnish winters when the sun sometimes shines only a few hours, four hours at the height of winter in Finnish Lapland.
Lily of the valley also occupies an important place in Finnish culture: it is frequently mentioned in romantic poetry and popular songs, and its name is also used as a traditional female name (Kielo). According to the Finland.fi site, we also learn that the Finnish name of thrush, Kielo, is often given by Finnish farmers to their favorite cow!
Symbol of a country very attached to its biodiversity, lily of the valley, in Finland, is much more than a simple flower: it embodies the spirit of the country, its deep link with nature, and the joy of the return of Nordic light.
Lily of the valley is one of the seven national emblems of Finland, alongside other natural symbols such as the singer swan, the white birch, the singer bear, the pole or even the ladybug with seven points.
