If there are mythical places in the history of cycling in France, this one is certainly part of it. The Domancy coast: this climb to the Arve valley, in Haute-Savoie, is rarely used by the Tour de France. The Large Loop has only passed there three times, in 2016, 2021 and 2023, during a steeply climbed time between Passy and Combloux.
But what brought in history this ascent of only 2.5 kilometers but at 9.4% average, it is a world championship on road organized in 1980 around Sallanches, a neighboring city of Domancy. The coast was then crossed many times, making it possible to create a wear race, benefiting the best runner in the world at the time, Frenchman Bernard Hinault, for his only title of world champion.
This legendary course will be brought up to date in 2027. The Haute-Savoie obtained two years ago the organization of the “super” world cycling championships, organized from August 24 to September 5, 2027 throughout the region. More than a classic World Cup, These “super global” will bring together all the road cycling events, track, BMX, mountain biking, gravel … or 19 events in two weeks.
This new World Cup in Haute-Savoie, the first on the road for 27 years in France after the 2000 edition in Plouay (Morbihan), will offer a 266-kilometer course for 20 laps of a 13.3 km circuit. A route favorable to climbers with a huge elevation of 5,700 m, and therefore 20 climbs from the Côte de Domancy.
In total, 10,000 cyclists and paracyclists are expected on 12 competition sites for 13 days of competition. Sallanches will host the road, Châtel Le Gravel, La Roche-sur-Foron will receive cycling indoors and the organizational center of these Worlds, the BMX will be in Annecy, which will also host the time trial. Only exception, The track cycling will ultimately be relocated to Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelinesthe La Roche-sur-Foron velodrome having not had the authorizations of the municipal council for its construction.
