New New Mexico police documents are used to trace the last tragic days of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa, who died in February at their home. Searching for online symptoms, isolation, Hantavirus: Puzzle parts are assembled.
Documents made public lift the veil a little more on the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. The 95-year-old actor and his 65-year-old wife were found lifeless in their isolated house near Santa Fe, in New Mexico on February 26. First medical expertise had established that the actor had died of natural causes, a week after his wife, swept away by a hantavirus contracted in their residence infested with rodents.

The new elements, from the local sheriff’s investigation, reveal the growing concern of Betsy Arakawa in the days preceding his death. The research carried out on his computer testifies to real discomfort: “covid and dizziness”, “nose that bleeds and flu”, “symptoms of the virus”. On February 10, she canceled a massage, explains that her husband has influenza symptoms, controls oxygen bottles on Amazon. The next day, she tried to consult a doctor at home.

Alzheimer’s
So far, we knew that Gene Hackman, suffering from Alzheimer, died a week after his wife, without anyone knowing if he had achieved what had happened. These new documents reinforce this hypothesis: according to testimonies from his daughters, he did not know how to use a phone or send an email, and showed advanced signs of disorientation. The investigation report specifies that he never tried to call for help. When he was found, alone in another room in the house, his body bore the marks of an advanced decomposition.

The survey also confirms that the Hantavirus, a disease transmitted by rodent excrement and died of Betsy Arakawa, has been detected in several annexes of the property. Three garages, two guest houses and several sheds presented traces of rodents. The very day of the discovery of the bodies, an antiparasitic technician was also scheduled to intervene.
The couple had lived isolated for years in a residence perched east of Santa Fe, and their isolation had accentuated after the pandemic. One of their recently operated dogs is also dead, locked in a cage. His death is attributed to dehydration.
