The NHL Stanley Cup qualifying series are still underway, but there will be other hockey matches to be tooth soon! The IIHF ice hockey world hockey championship will take place in Stockholm, Sweden, and Herning, Denmark, from May 9 to 25.
Here’s what you need to know to prepare you to encourage team Canada.
Who will be part of team Canada at the IIHF 2025 ice hockey world championship?
On May 1, Hockey Canada published a list of 15 players who will participate in the event: a goalkeeper, five defenders and nine attackers. Other players will be added to the list as soon as they are available, depending on the results of their NHL team during the Stanley Cup qualifiers.
Among the first 15 confirmed players, eight have already represented team Canada at the world championship (Adam Fantilli, Bo Horvat, Kent Johnson, Travis Konecny, Brandon Montour, Ryan O’Reilly, Travis Sanheim and Mackenzie Weegar).
Konecny and Sanheim were also part of the team that triumphed for the confrontation of the 4 nations last February.
On May 4, Hockey Canada confirmed that Sidney Crosby would join the team in Sweden. Olympic gold medalist twice and nicknamed “captain Canada”, Crosby recently led Canada to victory during the 4 nations confrontation. It will be his third participation in the IIHF ice hockey world championship, his most recent dating back to 2015, the year he guided Canada to the title as captain.

Team Canada will be led by Dean Evason, head coach of the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets. Evans was assistant coach of team Canada at the 2024 World Championship.
Team Canada’s assistant coaches will be Andrew Brunette (Nashville’s head coach from NHL), Ryan Huska (NHL Calgary Flames Coach) and Steve McCarthy (Deputy Coach’s Blue Jackets in the NHL).
What is the importance of the IIHF 2025 ice hockey world championship?
The tournament takes place in May. He therefore conflicts with the latest stages of the STANLEY Cup of the NHL Cup. This is why many leading players from each nation, including Canada, are not available. Even those whose teams are eliminated in time to participate in this championship sometimes choose to ignore the tournament in order to be able to recover after an exhausting season in the NHL.

Since 1920, Team Canada has participated in the IIHF ice hockey world championship on 77 times. From 1920 to 1968, the Olympic tournament served as a world championship. The world championships became an annual event from 1930. Canada won 28 gold medals, 16 silver medals and nine bronze medals. Its total of 53 medals is therefore the highest among all countries.
Team Canada won the world championship for the last time in 2023.
What is the format of the 2025 world championship?
The world championship brings together 16 countries divided into two groups for the preliminary round tournament. The first four teams of each group qualify for the quarter -finals. The team classified first in group A then faced the team ranked fourth in group B and so on (1a against 4b, 2A against 3b, 1b against 4a, 2b against 3A).
The semi-finals oppose the best classified semi-finalist in the least classified semi-finalist, while the second and third classified teams compete. The winning teams of the semi-finals qualify for the gold medal match. The semi-finals losers argue the bronze medal.
The tournament uses the IIHF three -point system:
- 3 points for a victory in regulation time
- 2 points for a vacuum in overtime/dam fire
- 1 point for a defeat in overtime/dam fire
- 0 point for a defeat in regulation time
