The negotiations between ArcelorMittal and the 5 local sections of the Metallos union representing the workers of Fermont and Port-Cartier began December.

A spokesperson for the mining company confirms that a conciliator request was to the Ministry of Labor with the aim of bringing the parties together. The company did not wish to comment more, emphasizing its objective of arriving at a negotiated agreement.

The last collective agreement concluded in 2021 after a 4 -week strike.

The Syndicat des Métallos did not want to comment on the situation but in a message addressed to its members, it specifies that it had tabled a proposal on the normative and monetary aspects at the end of the week.

The employers’ representatives have ceased the discussions to request the intervention of a conciliator according to the union.

One of the litigation points concerns a small group of 20 newly unionized workers. Metallos want negotiations concerning them to take place at the same time as that of other union members.

To set the tone for negotiations, the local section of the Fermont union posted song that recalls the highlights of negotiations with ArcelorMittal over the years.

The collective agreement of 2,500 workers from ArcelorMittal has been expired since February 28.
