“The took place mainly thanks to us, whether it pleases or not,” added the American president, recalling that he was going to establish another “day of victory” on November 11, this time for the First World War.

The Republican had already expressed this project on Monday on his Truth Social network.

“I noticed that France, I noticed that other countries were preparing to celebrate the day of victory,” he said, also evoking “, which will have a great celebration (note: in reality May 9), and, moreover, they lost millions of people and they were a major factor. But no one was as much as we do. »»

“We have received a lot of help from great people, from great allies, but I think no one would say that we were not the dominant strength” during these two world conflicts, the American president said.

However, he said that May 8 would not become a public holiday.

November 11 is already a federal holiday in the United States, in honor of veterans. The White House said that the “day of victory” for the First World War would be added to this day of tribute to the veterans, without replacing it.

On May 8, widely celebrated in (Russia famous for its part on May 9), marked the of the capitulation of Nazi Germany in 1945.

After the end of hostilities in Europe, the Second World War, however, continued in Asia until the signing of the capitulation of Japan, on September 2.

The United States has played a crucial role in the two world wars, where it got involved militarily, and provided very important material assistance. On the other hand, it was not they who deployed the most soldiers or suffered the most losses.

During the First World War, after refusing to engage in the conflict, the United States decided to intervene in 1917, pushed in particular by the intensification of the German underwater war, which targeted American commercial ships.

They mobilized four million men, much less than the allied countries in Europe where most of the conflict took place (nearly nine million for France or the United Kingdom, including Colonies, six million for , 18 million for Russia). Likewise, the estimate of their losses is significantly lower than that of other countries.

During the Second World War, the United States began by providing help from the Allies, and entered the conflict after being directly attacked by Japan at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

According to figures from the US National War Museum, the United States lost 416,800 soldiers during the conflict, a little more than the United Kingdom (383,600), but much less than the USSR, whose losses are located in a range of 8.8 to 10.7 million soldiers.
