President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived in kyiv this Saturday, May 10, to display their support for Ukraine.
These three European leaders went down to the train that brought them from Poland to Ukraine. They must later join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, arrived at the station, later at the station.
This visit to the French, German, British and Polish leaders symbolically responds to commemorations with great fanfare of the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany held on Friday in the Red Place around the Russian President Vladimir Putin and about twenty foreign leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“We will continue to increase our support for Ukraine. We will intensify our pressure on the Russian war machine until Russia accepts a lasting cease-fire,” warned the four European leaders in a joint declaration.
A virtual meeting scheduled during the day
The four leaders were welcomed at the station by the head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, Andriï Iermak, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andriï Sybiga.
During the day, European leaders will pay tribute to the Ukrainian soldiers and civilians killed and injured during the invasion led by Russia, in Maidan square, where flags float in memory of the victims.
A virtual meeting will also be organized, alongside President Volodymyr Zelensky, with the other leaders of the “volunteer coalition”, these Western countries ready to provide “security guarantees” to Ukraine.
The opportunity to take stock of “progress made for a future coalition bringing together air, land and sea forces” to help the Ukrainian army “after a possible peace agreement” with Russia, which has invaded Ukraine for three years, the four European leaders said in a joint declaration.
A call to “ceasefire” issued by Donald Trump
European leaders go to kyiv strong with Donald Trump’s call, who pressed Russia on Thursday to accept an “unconditional 30-day ceasefire”. The American president also threatened Ukraine and Russia with new Western sanctions, in the event of failure.
“We reaffirm our support for the calls launched by President Trump in favor of a peace agreement and we ask Russia to stop (Y) to hinder it,” hammered the four European leaders.
For the time being, Moscow has rejected calls to the ceasefire with Ukraine, just deciding a three-day truce which is due to end this Saturday at midnight, on the occasion of the celebrations of victory over Nazi Germany.
This is Emmanuel Macron’s second visit to Ukraine since the start of the war, after that of June 2022 at the time with German and Italian leaders.
