Belgian tourist and son killed in floods in Jordan

In , a tourist and her son have in floods in the south of the country. The woman’s two other were alive and in good health.

The four had been since due to floods in the Shoubak region, about 200 km south of the capital Amman, according to Jordan’s Petra agency. On Monday, the bodies of the mother and one son were recovered. Both have the Belgian citizenship.

According to the governor of the Ma’an district, the Belgian was on an adventure trip without a guide with her three children. They were part of a larger group. Most of that group could be evacuated by the authorities. The deceased woman’s two other children were also initially missing, but have now been found in good health by the emergency services.

The FPS Foreign Affairs confirmed the news on Monday. “We are aware of this case and regret the death of our two fellow citizens,” stated the FPS Foreign Affairs. “We are following up this case closely together with our embassy in Amman. As this concerns individual cases, we cannot provide any further information.” According to Petra, an investigation into the exact circumstances of the deaths is ongoing.

On Sunday, the ancient city of Petra, a popular tourist destination in Jordan, was evacuated due to in the region. About 1,800 tourists were quickly brought to safety.
