The city of Lévis is launching a market study to analyze the multifunctional amphitheater project of three ice creams and 5,000 to 8000 seats which could also host shows. The future project could cost between $ 50 and 60 million.

The $ 51,700 study will be financed equally by the city and the Lévis sports movement (MSL) and will be carried out by case over a period of 12 weeks.
She will study the possibility of implanting an arena of three ice creams, “a large ice and two community ice cream,” said the mayor, Gilles Lehouillier. The future project is estimated at $ 50 million and would be carried out “quickly”, said the mayor. “We are organized to watch late,” said Lehouillier, when questioned about the city’s ability to finance the infrastructure.
He did not want to engage in an amount currently, preferring to wait for the conclusion of the market study. However, he recalled that the municipality was ready to invest $ 20 million on a new ice in the east of the city.
One thing is certain, decided the mayor, the construction moratorium which applies to two thirds of the territory of Lévis will not have an impact on this future project, which will be considered an “exception”.
“Huge complex”
“The city could create an immense complex, an amphitheater, with a multiple vocation. We could also present shows, ”said Lehouillier. It would be built in the most populous sector, the Desjardins district.
-“While several cities comparable to Lévis, such as Gatineau, Trois-Rivières or Laval, have already equipped themselves with modern amphitheatres, it is time for Lévis to take this stage. With this market study, we take a first step and take a concrete gesture in order to provide our city with a multifunctional infrastructure that meets the needs of our community, ”said Mr. Lehouillier.
It would be carried out in public-private partnership because the City considers that it has little chance of seeing its project funded by the government as part of the financial, recreational, sporting and outdoor financial aid program. Whatever happens, the government will be called upon to contribute in another way, he added.
Government refusal
The city has wiped a refusal from the Quebec government for the funding by this program of a new arena in the east of the city. After this setback, the city has chosen to go to this other option, which allows more to “make profitable” the equipment.
The sports teams, both civilian and school and college, need great ice hours, reported the mayor. Not to mention the needs that emanate from the population, for leisure. “The needs in ice hours are even more important than they were two years ago. You must quickly put a project forward ”.
The president of the sports committee, Jeannot Demers, said that “it’s a great adventure that begins”. He is convinced that the study will clearly understand the needs of Lévis in this sense.
