(Ecofin agency) – In preparation for the 2030 World Cup which it co -organized, Morocco has launched a large infrastructure project. The Rabat-Casablanca motorway is one of these projects and aims to lighten traffic on an already saturated highway.
Morocco confirmed, Tuesday, May 6, the imminent launch of its new continental Rabat-Casablanca motorway, aimed at unclogging the existing road axis and strengthening connectivity between the two main economic cities in the country. This announcement marks the passage from the preparation phase to that of the effective start of the work.
According to Morocco Highway (ADM), the National Company in charge of the management and development of the motorway network, tenders for construction were launched in December 2024 and the various markets are in the process of adjudication. In addition, local media indicate that the expropriation phase should end in May 2025.
This new 59 -kilometer infrastructure is part of the Moroccan motorway program aimed at supporting national economic and logistical development. Its main objective is to streamline traffic on the current A1 motorway, one of the most used in the kingdom. The highway will connect the Tamena interchange (Rabat) to the southern ring road of Casablanca (Tit Mellil), via Benslimane, near the future Grand Stade Hassan II and the military airport.
The project represents a forecast investment of 6.5 billion dirhams (around $ 705 million) and includes the construction of 8 viaducts, 47 works of art (one every 1.3 km), 5 exchangers (every 12 km), as well as 3 bifurcations and nodes, including one in Skhirate. This initiative responds directly to the mobility challenges linked to coorganization by Morocco, Spain and Portugal of the 2030 World Cup. By decongesting the Rabat-Casablanca axis, it aims to ensure optimal management of tourist and logistical flows during this event.
-As soon as it is put into service, the highway should accommodate daily traffic of 27,000 vehicles, reducing pressure on the A1 motorway. It should also facilitate the transport of goods between industrial zones and strategic ports of the region, potentially stimulating exchanges. In doing so, it could strengthen the economic competitiveness of the Rabat-Casablanca corridor, in agreement with the vision of Morocco to position itself as a regional logistics hub in North Africa.
