China militarizes its rare earths

It is probably a retaliatory measure against the trade war launched by Donald Trump. But by establishing controls on Chinese exports of rare earths, China mainly wants to use these omnipresent metals in civil and military technological products to its pawns at the geostrategic level.

Since April 4, Chinese exports of six rare land has been subject to restrictions. These minerals on which China has a quasi-monopoly can only leave the country with export licenses. “On the one hand, China receives fewer rare land from Myanmar, because of the secessionist rebellions under way in the provinces of the north of the country, close to China. However, the Myanmar provides a quarter of Chinese imports of rare earths, ”observes DONNEN, co -founder of the Rare Metal Company in Geneva, a consulting company specializing in critical metals.
