The event aims to present the progress of the project, which explores tracks to reduce the carbon footprint of the book sector. Among the themes addressed: the experimentation of a subscription or rental model in bookstores, the relocation of the manufacture of complex works, and the analysis of the carbon impact of the dynamic short draw.
This day invites you to meet the research team, which will present their work in progress, relating to the following subjects:

• Printing optimization: analysis of the carbon impact of the dynamic short draw

Although often perceived as less polluting, the book industry has a notable environmental impact. On average, the production of a new book generates approximately 1.3 kg of Co₂, equivalent to a car trip from 10 to 15 minutes.
A living land study indicates that 71 % of emissions come from manufacturing (paper, printing, transport), 17 % distribution, 10 % of design and 2 % of diffusion.
In 2018, around 46,898 tonnes of books were returned to publishers, 28,367 tonnes of which were destroyed, representing 60.48 % of returns.

Faced with these findings, initiatives emerge to reduce the carbon footprint of the sector, such as the optimization of prints, the relocation of production and the adoption of alternative economic models.
