Although often perceived as less polluting, the book industry has a notable environmental impact. On average, the production of a book generates approximately 1.3 kg of Co₂, equivalent to a car trip from 10 to 15 minutes.

A living land study indicates that 71 % of emissions come from manufacturing (paper, printing, transport), 17 % distribution, 10 % of design and 2 % of diffusion.

In 2018, around 46,898 tonnes of books were returned to publishers, 28,367 tonnes of which were destroyed, representing 60.48 % of returns.

Faced with these findings, initiatives emerge to reduce the carbon footprint of the sector, such as the optimization of prints, the relocation of production and the adoption of alternative economic models.
