Stuck in a mountainous throat south of Italy, a Brussels couple was rescued after a particularly delicate operation led by Italian emergency services.
What was to be a pleasant getaway in the heart of Italian nature turned into a long wait and a complex rescue intervention, according to Het Laatste Nieuws.
On Wednesday, a couple from Brussels residents embarked on a hike from the village of Chiusano San Domenico, in the Campania region, an hour’s drive from Naples. The objective: to reach the top of the Tuoro Monte, a destination popular with landscape and pure air lovers.
But during the descent, things get complicated. The couple loses their way and finds themselves blocked in a throat, between two particularly steep ravines. Unable to continue or go up, they alert help by calling 112.
Difficult rescue operation
Quickly mobilized, Italian emergency services have to face very difficult land. The teams must reminder along steep rocks using ropes to reach hikers in distress. The operation lasts several hours.
“The two people, a man and a woman from Brussels, were in good health”, said the rescuers. “After being put in safety, they were evacuated from the top of the ravine using climbing strings. They were then brought back to the village by vehicles, and the operation ended.”
