An inspector for 2,000 inhabitants
The main concern of Walloon mayor is that a merger of police areas would reduce local police. Under the previous legislature, the federal standard provided for a neighborhood inspector for 4,000 inhabitants. The Arizona government is now targeting a ratio of an inspector for 2,000 inhabitants, in order to guarantee rapid service to the population. However, in practice, it is not so simple.
“Take the example of the province of Luxembourg. If we want to merge areas, this means that we should merge the whole province”continues Eddy Quaino. “”How would we keep a police station in Arlon and offer service to the inhabitants who live in the depths of the campaign?“
A single corps chief, regionalized metro police, refinancing, entered into force in 2027: here is the merger of Brussels police areas
The Walloon topography is not comparable with that of Brussels, with a much lower population per square meter and security issues of another order. However, it appears that certain small police areas would not be contrary to a merger with other small areas, as we saw in July 2023 with the merger of the areas of Binche-Anderlues and Lermes.
-A standing working group
In fact, the two former police areas collaborated very closely on the ground as well as administently. They already worked as one and the same entity. They therefore decided to materialize the project thanks to a scale enlargement. A model that could reproduce in the future. A working group is set up with Walloon Corps and Burgiesters to study, in particular, this question but nothing is, for the time being, materialized.
Another vision in Flanders
Like many other aspects, the vision in the fusion of the fonts is different between the north and the south of the country. Flemish authorities encourage groupings for reasons of economies of scale and resource optimization. This reorganization led to a centralized model. “”Instead of having police branches everywhere, there is a central police station by police zone. The local police are therefore no longer present in the neighborhoods “, specifies Eddy Quaino.
Alcohol-free Teambuilding, Meditation, Personalized Coaching: Anti-Burn Out for police officers
“We don’t want to get into something punitive “, Recalls Bernard Quintin again. “I listen to the mayor, the corps chiefs. This merger will be positive for the Brussels residents. Just as it could be elsewhere. We incite the police to open a reflection on this subject, taking example in Brussels. I could impose the merger of the six Brussels police zones via a royal decree. It is not my method. But, is it consistent that the Flemand Brabant, which has 1.2 million residents – like Brussels – has 23 police areas? “
