In Belgium, the CNE and ACV Pulss unions filed an indefinite strike notice, effective from this Monday, for Ryanair staff based at Charleroi airport and ensuring flights to Amman (Jordan) and Tel Aviv (Israel).
The decision follows the failure of negotiations with the management of the Low-Cost company in order to set up a volunteer system for connections to conflict zones, RTBF reported.
“All European companies have such a volunteer system, except Ryanair, which remains inflexible,” says Didier Lebbe, permanent secretary to the CNE. “There is no question of a boycott of Israel at all,” he adds.

“It’s just a matter of common sense. It should be understood that some staff members do not want to go to areas of conflict and that their families are also worried. »»
“To go to Amman, the planes previously avoided flying over Israel via Egypt. But now, for reasons of fuel economy, pilots are forced to fly over Israel. We all remember what happened to the Malaysian Airlines plane above Ukraine [en 2014] And this even before this country was considered an area of war, ”adds the unionist. “This also raises questions in terms of insurance while the pilots have not received any instructions in the event of an emergency on site. They do not know how to react, ”says Didier Lebbe.
Thus, after the failure of negotiations, and as of this Monday, the members of the staff refusing to operate flights above or for war areas will be fully covered by the right to strike. But, despite the notice of strike, the Ryanair flight Charleroi-Tel Aviv on Monday morning took place, as well as that to Amman in the afternoon.
In addition to the question of imposed overview of war areas, the trade unionists also denounce within society a “notable hardening of the managerial attitude” and “a multiplication of pressures, intimidation as well as maneuvers of disinformation and lies”.
