During the Villeurbannais municipal council held on April 14, elected officials voted for the establishment of a mixed economy company with a single operation (SEMOP). The latter will carry out a renovation and transformation project of the Astroballe room.

Built in 1995, the astroballe basketball room in Villeurbanne will have a facelift. During the municipal council of April 14, the elected representatives of Villeurbannais voted for the establishment of a mixed economy company with a single operation (SEMOP). Among the future projects carried out by SEMOP: the renovation of the astroballe basketball room, especially used by ASVEL. All for an estimated cost of 60 million euros.

According to Le Progrès, the work provides the thermal and energy renovation of the place. The purchase of new equipment, furniture as well as accessibility work are also included. Finally, these space renovations and reorganizations should allow the room to diversify its programming. At the end of this work, the place should be able to host shows and concerts at 6000 seats.

10 million euros for the city

For this project, the city of Villeurbanne has chosen the concession. If the latter will invest 10 million euros in the project, private investors chosen will take care of the rest. They will also hold the management and operation of the room until the end of the SEMOP, in 30 years. Among the contenders, Progress reveals GL Events, Holnest or AEG. The choice should be made before the summer of 2026 for an end of work expected between 2027 and 2028. During the work phase, the ASVEL will be forced to find a new playground.
