The Royal Palace published a new photograph of the Royal couple on Wednesday evening, on vacation in Spain with their children. The sovereigns decided to browse a section of the famous Chemin de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, to the Spanish city of the same name. During the walk, Prince Emmanuel staggered his ankle, which forces him to move in crutches.
It is a tradition anchored in the royal family since 2017. Each year, the sovereigns and their four children travel a section of this famous route which still brings together pilgrims from around the world today. This year, the royal couple as well as Princess Eléonore and the princes Gabriel and Emmanuel started from Santa Irene, and continued their journey by Lavacolla and Monte Do Gozo, to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostela.
In the photos, we can notice that Prince Emmanuel is walking with crutches. He has suffered from a sprain since Tuesday, which occurred while walking with his parents along the Compostela path. The royal family is in Spain for Easter holidays. King Philippe celebrated his 65th birthday there on Tuesday and Princess Eléonore celebrates her 17 spring on Wednesday.
Compostela’s paths were declared in 1987 “cultural route of the Council of Europe” by the Council of Europe. Since 2013, Compostela’s paths have attracted more than 200,000 pilgrims each year. The culmination of these paths, recognizable by the scallop shell which serves as an emblem, is the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia (Spain). The pilgrims are greeted there by the imposing cathedral at the richly decorated baroque facade.
The pilgrimage of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostela is one of the three great pilgrimages of Christianity, with those of Jerusalem and Rome.
