Sunrise UPC buys back your old smartphone more easily

Sunrise Buyback.

Like other companies in the market, Sunrise UPC tries to upcycle our old smartphones which contain dozens of different metals and therefore need to be recycled as best they can. Thanks to Sunrise Buybackcustomers of this operator can easily sell their used mobile phones, tablets and connected watches to it.

It must be said that there is a real problem with electronic waste. Their volume continues to increase from year to year according to technological developments. Various studies highlight this worrying progression.

Explosion of dormant waste

According to this UN report, 53.6 million tonnes of electronic waste were produced in 2019. This is a record figure and up 21% in just five years. Global e-waste will reach 74 million metric tons by 2030, nearly doubling e-waste in just 16 years.

And unfortunately, this waste is not always valued as it should be. Around 40% of the Swiss population keeps an old smartphone in a drawer. This estimate is based on a survey sponsored by vente.ch, a website owned by Recommerce, a company that offers various services – purchase, sale, repair – for mobile devices.

An interesting initiative

Until now, Sunrise UPC customers could only sell their devices in Sunrise stores. Recently, with Sunrise Buyback, it is possible to do this directly when purchasing a device, or by telephone and in the online store. The devices are then refurbished for reuse.

Sunrise UPC’s initiative, even if some will liken it to greenwashing, is to be welcomed. Even if it pushes for sale, it should make it possible to recondition and resell at least 20,000 devices (smartphones, tablets, connected watches) per year by 2025, according to the operator’s estimates articulated in this press release. Still, recovering the more than 50 metals contained in a smartphone (animated computer graphics) requires a certain know-how…
