This is worrying news for Périgord, a major producer of fatty waterflies. This Tuesday, January 21, an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in the Bournat animal park, in the Bugue sector.

The park was closed to the public at the end of the season, in September 2024, which effectively limits the risks of spread due to the movement of people. After analysis on dead waterflies revealing the presence of the virus, state services immediately deployed the health measures planned in this case. The park has been emptied of its animals, the birds will have to be slaughtered in the week before the site is “disinfected by a specialized company according to regulatory procedures and under the supervision of the DDESTPP of Dordogne” specifies the prefecture.

Marie Aubert, prefect of Dordogne, immediately issued an order to prevent the possible spread of the virus to wildlife and to limit its spread to the rest of the poultry industry. A high risk, despite the vaccination system deployed on farms since October 2023.

The decree defines the three municipalities placed in a protection zone within a radius of three kilometers around the epicenter, namely Campagne, Saint Chamassy and Le Bugue.

Ten other municipalities, within a radius of ten kilometers, have been placed in a surveillance zone. These are Coux-et-Bigaroque, Fleurac, le Buisson de Cadouin, Les Eyzies, Mauzens and Miremont, Meyrals, Paunat, Saint-Avit de Vialard, Trémolat and part of Val-de Louyre and Caudeau.

All places holding poultry and captive birds in this sector must follow a rigorous protocol strictly prohibiting, unless expressly waived by the prefecture, any movement or introduction of new birds. The system obviously concerns professional breeders, but also individuals who keep backyard or ornamental birds.

In its press release, the prefecture finally recalls that “the consumption of meat, foie gras and eggs – and more generally any food product based on poultry meat – presents no risk to human health“.
