This biosourced material that is boisbois has been used by humans since the Paleolithic. In other words, always, or almost… But raising a 15-story wooden building is an architectural feat!
The emergence of the Wood Up tower
Located opposite Ivry-sur-Seine with a privileged view of the banks of the Seine, the tower Wood Up was born from the collaboration between the LAN architecture studio and REI Habitat, the first developer to be labeled Bois de France and certified PEFCPEFC. Its construction is part of a development project for the left bank of the capital, the aim of which is to reconnect Paris with its nearby suburbs.
Seven years of work were necessary to see this architectural “curiosity” born. “Curiosity” because, as the LAN studio explains, it is “ one of the first examples in Europe of building vertical in wooden structure » and above all the largest in Europe of this type, it is therefore impossible not to talk about it! The tower Wood Up is also the first wood-certified building in France and BBCA certified for its low emissionemission carbone.
A risqué equal
If the bet is daring, it is because it is very technical and is based on a set of calculations, full-scale tests of resistance to bad weather, feufeu and the noise that doubled the durationduration why constructionconstruction compared to initial forecasts. Regardless, the project is very real and stands proudly in the Parisian sky.
REI Habitat aims to mainly use beechbeech in the construction of the tower Wood Up. This is a species of wood chosen for its sustainabilitysustainability and its resistance, present in two thirds of French forests and despite everything little used.
The characteristics of the Wood Up tower
The tower has 15 floors of 132 housing units, a 700 m shared green terrace2 located at 16e and top floor, and a large common area with a 300 m terrace2 visible at 8e floor. The base of the building will be intended to accommodate businesses.
-The construction of the tower Wood Up allowed a 60% reduction in the carbon footprint compared to a similar concrete construction. The environmental impact was further limited thanks to theforwardingforwarding wood by river from the forests of Normandy and the creation “modular furniture assembled with recycled wood scraps from construction, manufactured by Remake, the REI subsidiary expert in reuse of REI Habitat”explains the promoter REI Habitat.
The warm interiors of the apartments, where wood remains omnipresent, leave a prominent place for brightnessbrightness thanks to a facade “entirely encapsulated in glass”, specifies the LAN studio. However, the “sauna” effect will be avoided thanks to silver thermal curtains which will limit the radiation of the soleilsoleil.
This extraordinary tower ultimately cost 25.1 million euros, a cost of around 2,700 euros per m2 (compared to around 2,300 euros for a classic building). There is no doubt that upon purchase, such services will impact the price, certainly higher than the market price. But isn’t living in such a place a real life choice? Between the excitement of the streets of Paris and the desire to reconnect with a semblance of nature thanks to this materialmaterial noble that is wood…
The construction of the tower Wood Up allowed REI Habitat to embark on an approach somewhat different from its core business: A Building A Forest. The aim is to offset the carbon emissions generated during construction via forestry projects (forestation, reforestation, experimental programs).
