While he must face the 4e world player, Taylor Fritz, this Saturday (not before 3 a.m.) for a place in the round of 16 of the Australian Open, Gaël Monfils was questioned at a press conference about the differences in the game between his debut, in 2005, and now, in 2025. Excerpts.
Seeing the generation that came after Roger (Federer), Rafa (Nadal) and Novak (Djokovic), and then the current players, how difficult is it and how much has the game improved in 20 years? How much better a player are you than then?
GAEL MONFILS: I have the impression that the game is still a little faster, of course, a little faster. I think technology has evolved a lot. Today, every player is a professional within a great team. I think physically it's different, so we evolve, I guess. I think that in 20 years it will perhaps be even faster, more physical or different. I feel like the rackets, the strings, the balls, everything is changing. I'm just trying to keep up with this evolution.
