We learned of the death of the photographer Michel Medinger by the association Let’s go to Arles. Here is their text.
One of the greatest Luxembourg photographers, Michel Medinger, passed away this week. It is with immense sadness that we learned of his death from his daughters, Isabelle and Véronique.
Born in 1941 in Luxembourg, Michel Medinger first developed a passion for painting before devoting himself to photography from the 1960s. Exhibited in Europe, the United States, China and Japan, his photographs are part of private and public collections, Luxembourg and international. In Luxembourg, his works have been regularly presented at the Galerie Clairefontaine as well as at the National Audiovisual Center (CNA), notably during the major retrospective The Photographic Universes of Michel Medinger and in the eponymous book dedicated to him. in 2018.
Michel Medinger has had a profound impact on photography with his talent, his unique perspective and his offbeat humor.
Winner of the Luxembourg Photography Award 2024, he was selected by an international jury to exhibit his work during the 55th edition of the Rencontres d’Arles. His exhibition, Michel Medinger, The Order of Things, presented at the Chapelle de la Charité, attracted more than 40,000 visitors, achieving resounding success.
In 2024, the general Luxembourg public was also able to (re)discover his photographs at the Parc de Merl and at the Hamm hospice, through two exhibitions which gave pride of place to his career as an accomplished athlete and recalled his exceptional participation in Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964.
-Last year, as an extension of the various exhibitions which put him in the spotlight and the publication of the book Lord of Things, the CNA began a new phase of acquiring photographs of the artist in order to enrich its collections. These new acquisitions will join the traveling exhibition in Arles next fall at the CNA. This unique project, as well as the Michel Medinger – Vanitas exhibition which will be presented at the Villa Vauban in the spring, will only be more vibrant tributes to this extraordinary artist!
Lët’z Arles and the CNA join forces to convey their most sincere thoughts to the artist’s daughters, his family and his traveling companions, who had the privilege of being surrounded by his fantasy and his affection .
