Aires Mateus Archive: Nuno Moreira: Geometries of Silence

This exhibition atAires Mateus Archive of Lisbon brings together a selection of works developed by Nuno Moreira over the past eight years, as part of an ever-evolving project that began during an artist residency at the Museu da Luz in 2017. The images on display are intended as fragments of a larger visual narrative , inviting the observer to an interpretive experience. The minimalist compositions explore the interaction of light and shadow, a recurring theme in the artist’s work. In this series, figurative elements are replaced by structural lines, rich textures, pronounced vanishing points and architectural transitions, such as entrances and passages. The images are marked by a decadent and symbolic style, and the monochrome palette intensifies the perception of the environments, prompting the audience to reflect on the randomness of the photographed spaces and the latent beauty of seemingly bare settings.

Geometries of Silence proposes a confrontation between the spectator’s expectations and the interpretation of undefined territories, where the void assumes a constructive role, serving as a catalyst for new meanings. The stillness of the scenes and the formal refinement of the compositions create an introspective atmosphere in which silence is amplified by precise lines, deep contrasts and enveloping shadows.

Nuno Moreira is a visual artist and author who has exhibited regularly since 2006, in Portugal and abroad. Having a background in cinema, he uses photography as his primary means of investigation to explore the formal aspects of light and shadow, the unknown and the limitations of the body, creating deeply poetic visual compositions. His artistic practice, often materialized in artist’s books, includes works in public and private collections, namely State of Mind (2013), ZONE (2015), She Looks into Me (2018) et ERRATA (2020).
