Socialist deputies decided not to censor the prime minister

INFO LE FIGARO – This decision was taken on Wednesday afternoon during a meeting of the parliamentary group and must still be ratified by the national office.

At the end of the suspense, the 66 socialist deputies decided not to censor the Bayrou government. The decision was taken after several hours of discussions during a group meeting Wednesday afternoon at the National Assembly, where 80% of participants spoke in favor of non-censorship. “We maintained doubt about our position until the end to try to obtain more from Matignon”whispers an elected official.

Despite the divisions that emerged within the parliamentary group after François Bayrou’s general policy declaration on Tuesday, a common position was finally adopted. This was to be ratified by the highest executive body of the Socialist Party (PS) on Thursday morning. Within this national office, which makes the final decision, several voices expressed their disagreement.

By refusing to vote on the motion of censure tabled by their allies in the New Popular Front (NFP), the socialists are exposing themselves to the remonstrations of the rebels, communists and environmentalists. Jean-Luc Mélenchon had warned on Tuesday evening that each deputy who did not vote for the motion of censure would be pitted against an Insoumis candidate in his constituency in the next legislative elections.

By this collegial choice, the PS therefore assumes the break with La insoumise (LFI). The executives had been keen in recent days to present themselves in “party of government”capable of making compromises. This position allowed the socialists to extract several concessions from the Bayrou government, notably the opening of a social conference on pensions, discussions about a tax on the optimization of high assets, the end of reimbursement of medicines, maintenance of 4,000 teaching positions. So many victories which are not victories, or which are largely insufficient, in the eyes of the rest of the left, which will therefore censor the government, as announced. Their votes will not be enough, however, to overthrow François Bayrou’s team, which should count, in addition to the socialist deputies, on the non-censorship of the National Rally.
