Review of the film “A Bear in the Jura”, by Franck Dubosc: a funny and effective black comedy

Franck Dubosc does not hide the fact that he was freely inspired by the tone and atmosphere of American black comedies à la Fargo to write his new film, A bear in the Jura. He thus creates a fun thriller full of suspense.

As the title suggests, A bear in the Jura takes us to the Jura region, in eastern , a few days before Christmas. At the wheel of his truck, Michel (Franck Dubosc), a nurseryman consumed by debt, hits a car while trying to avoid a bear on a snowy road in the middle of the forest. Bad luck, the two occupants of the vehicle, who had pulled over to the side of the road at that precise moment, were killed instantly.

With the help of his wife Cathy (Laure Calamy), he decides to cover up the accident after discovering two million euros in the trunk of the two victims’ car. But of course, this decision to try to keep this money for themselves will quickly come back to haunt them.

Squeaky humor

Let’s say it straight away: Franck Dubosc is not reinventing the wheel with this black comedy which recalls the world of the Coen brothers’ films (Fargo, The Grand Lebowski). But the French actor and director managed to effectively appropriate the genre by inserting a touch of scathing humor and integrating into his story a gallery of funny but endearing characters, “ordinary people plunged into extraordinary situations” like Dubosc likes to say it himself.

Benoit Poelvoorde is hilarious, as always, in the skin of a jaded police chief completely overwhelmed by events. At his side, Joséphine de delivers one of the funniest performances in the film as a policewoman who doesn’t hold her tongue in her pocket. Even if the scenario runs out of steam a little in the last third, A bear in the Jura will delight fans of black comedies and snowy thrillers.
