Vire Normandie buys a portrait of Léon Dupont painted by Charles Léandre for €1,800

During the meeting of Vire municipal council, Monday December 16, 2024, the elected officials took action buying a painting for its museum.

And collector offered to sell Vire a pastel portrait of Léon Dupontoffice manager at Crédit Foncier de , father of René Dupont (aviator and hero of the First World War)who married in 1919 Madeleine Lemoine.

The latter was born in Neuville. His father was the son of the last paper maker in Saint-Germain-de-Tallevende. His mother was the sister of Charles Léandre. Last heiress of Charles Léandre, she contacted the town of Vire which acquired nearly 200 works in 1968.

The portrait purchased this month was kept by the Dupont family and then sold to a antique dealer who himself sold it to the current owner.

The price of the pastel by the seller is €1,800and “seems reasonable due to the author's rating and the state of conservation of the work, which can be immediately exhibited,” comments Marie-Claire Lemarchand, culture assistant.

The dimensions of the portrait are 69 cm high by 57 cm wide in its original frame.
