Every year, this prestigious award attracts all eyes. It must be said that the prize from the Jacques Rougerie Foundation – Academy of Fine Arts stands out among the trophies awarded in the sector. The international architectural competition once again praised ingenious work during the awards ceremony on December 11, 2024 at the Palais de l’Institut de France, in Paris.
The prize aims to reward visionary projects making it possible to adapt infrastructures to climatic and environmental challenges, and to propose new ones for ocean and space explorations.
Grand prize “Architecture and innovation linked to climate and rising water levels”
Chaired by Vladimir Ryabinin, Russian oceanographer, climatologist and meteorologist, former executive secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO and Deputy Director General of UNESCO, the Grand Prize “Architecture and innovation linked to climate and rising seas ” returned to two projects, “the Mallorquín purification park” (Colombia) and “Souffle” (Cameroon).
The Mallorquín purification park project (Colombia) is led by Alejandro Vargas Marulanda and David Mesa Arbelaez and is inspired by the cultures of the indigenous Zenú people to adapt infrastructure to climate change. The operation “offers 36 hectares of water management for Caribbean coastal cities. It combines natural solutions and advanced technologies to prevent flooding, purify water, protect ecosystems and create public spaces“, writes the jury in a press release. The generative development model that the winners propose is based on a system of canals and artificial wetlands to purify water and allow adequate management.
