The painting is one of the headliners of the Musée d'Orsay. On the 5th floor, next to the packed Van Gogh room, the one dedicated to Cezanne and Renoir is also always full on this Tuesday morning. And the card players attract all attention. This summer, to see it, you will have to come to Aix, where it will be one of the gems of the exhibition “Cezanne at Jas de Bouffan”. It was in the family bastide that it was painted by the Aix master, at the beginning of the 1890s. It represents two men face to face, seated at a table and cards in hands, and one of the two with a pipe to the mouth.
Daily life has always inspired artists
“There are many pipe smokers in Impressionism, between Sisley, Renoir…indicates Sylvain Amic, president of the Musée d’Orsay. At the moment, we are showing Caillebotte, we have workers at work, house painters, floor planers… What impressionist painting shows us is also the reality of ordinary life. There are landscapes and light, with new techniques, but it's almost painting in action.“
