The best macro photos of 2024 are here, and they are incredible

The Close-up Photographer of the Year (CUPOTY) competition has revealed its list of finalists for the 2024 edition. This competition, initiated in 2018 by Tracy and Dan Calder, highlights close-up, macro and micro photography, to reveal aspects of nature that are inaccessible to the naked eye. This year, the competition received more than 11,600 images divided into 11 categories: animals, insects, mushrooms, underwater landscapes, and portraits of invertebrates that were sometimes a little scary.
Aloys Pichard

Macro in the spotlight

After more than 20 hours of evaluation, the judges selected photographs that explored in detail various natural environments and numerous species. Among the finalists, photographs like Flowing Kelp by Sigfrido Zimmermann show underwater algae bathed in filtered light, while Wallaby Baby by Pedro Jarque captures the emergence of a young wallaby from its mother's bag. This type of image offers a detailed vision of often inaccessible scenes from the animal and plant world.

Daniel Sly

In the Animals category

In the Animals category, we find portraits of significant scenes, such as Deadly Amplexus by Aloys Pichard, who shows a reproduction scene among toads, and Pine Marten by Csaba Daróczi, a black and white portrait of a marten in the forest. Other categories, such as Insects, include photographs such as Clash of the Titans by Svetlana Ivanenko, who captures two beetles in the middle of a fight. These images show the diversity and intensity of the animal world in close-up.

Fascinating mushrooms

The Underwater category is also impressive. Everything’s-a-ok by Gabriel Jensen shows a fish caught between the shells of a giant clam, while Potbellied Seahorse by Daniel Sly presents a seahorse in an environment bathed in blue and green shades. Fungi and molds are also represented with photographs like Storm of Spores by José Luis Gigirey, which explores the textured and complex appearance of these organisms. These images reveal the hidden beauty of often overlooked forms of life.
