Deborah Bell Photographs: Dag Alveng: Telemark Photographs

Deborah Bell Photographs present Dag Alveng : Photographs from Telemarkan exhibition of large-scale black and white photographs taken by the artist in the scenic Telemark region of Norway between 2020 and 2021. In 2015, the historic industrial heritage site of Rjukan-Notodden in Telemark, Norway, was been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Shortly after, the Telemark Kunstmuseum commissioned Dag Alveng to create an exhibition accompanied by a catalog of photographs to celebrate the preservation of this important territory. Five of these photographs make up the current exhibition. Telemark is a large county in southern Norway stretching from the mountains to the North Sea. Not only was this idyllic terrain the site of Norway’s technological progress and economic expansion in the first half of the 20th century; it is also the site of Norway’s spectacular success in preventing possible atomic disaster during World War II. Alveng traveled through the different municipalities of Telemark – Fjone, Nesland, Notodden, Rjukan and Tinn – where he photographed magnificent landscapes of clear lakes, wide rivers, deep gorges and cliffs, as well as its magnificent waterfalls, a natural scene for this incredible story of industrial development.
