The photographic competition “Water in Iran” was launched by Ithaca and by the Franco Iranian Center intended for photographers residing in Iran. For this competition, more than 200 applications were received. The objective of the competition was to combine documentary photographic writings with experimental photographic writings in order to report on the water situation in Iran through a collective exhibition.
The Franco-Iranian jury designated Romin Mohtasham as the winner of the competition. Born in 1961 in Urmia, Iran, Romin Mohtasham graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran. His work has been exhibited on more than 80 occasions in Iran and internationally. He won the special prize of the 4th, 8th, 10th and 11th photography biennial in Iran. Romin Mohtasham is carrying out long-term work on Lake Urmia (sometimes spelled Oroumiyeh), in northwest Iran. It is one of the saltiest lakes in the world, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
“Due to climate change on the one hand, and the construction of dams and roads on the lake on the other, the lake is drying up, and gradually a pool of salt emerges, dispersing dust salt in the air. This led to drought in neighboring towns.
