Jean-Claude Aunos, press photographer based in for 10 years, died this Wednesday, September 25 at the age of 84. The religious funeral will be celebrated on Thursday, October 3 at Saint-Michel Cathedral.

Jean-Claude Aunos died this Wednesday, September 25 at the age of 84. Based in Carcassonne since 2014, he leaves behind a career as rich as it is atypical. His funeral will be celebrated on October 3 at Saint-Michel Cathedral.

Jean-Claude Aunos was born in in 1939, to a French shoemaker father and an Argentine domestic servant mother, who left him his dual nationality and his keen eye on the world. He spent part of his childhood in his mother’s country, before returning to Paris in 1951 where he obtained a CAP in industrial designer.

He discovered photography almost by chance: while working for the Federation of Mechanical and Metal Transforming Industries, he learned this art on the job, with his company’s photo department. In 1965, he decided to devote himself solely to this passion, opened a small lab and began with commercial photos. He then turned to photography for the specialized music press, and worked, from the 1970s, for magazines like Guitare, Claviers, and Jazz Magazine.

His career took a new turn in 1984: he moved to Egypt where he worked as a press photographer at the AFP Cairo bureau. He covers important events such as the police revolt in 1985 and the Sharm-el-Sheikh peace conferences.

The photographer has also traveled the Middle East, and sets his lenses in Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. His images are published in many recognized newspapers, from L’Express to National Geographic, including the New York Times, Jeune Afrique and Le Figaro.

It was in 2014, after thirty years in Cairo where he met his wife and gave birth to their daughter, that the Aunos family decided to return to , to settle in Carcassonne. In 2018, when L’Indépendant made his portrait, Jean-Claude Aunos devoted himself to his archives and continued his photographic work in South America.
