Revisit Watteau, the Louvre Museum’s major exhibition on the painter’s masterpiece

Discover all the secrets of “Pierrot”, Watteau’s masterpiece, with the unique exhibition at the Louvre Museum organized from October 16, 2024 to February 3, 2025.

On the occasion of its restoration, the Louvre Museum wishes to highlight Watteau’s painting The Pierrot, said the Gilles. An iconic work by the painter, which was nevertheless discovered late. Discover all the secrets of this character and the influence he had on different artistic fields, from the 18th century to the present day.

The Louvre Museum is therefore organizing an exhibition entitled Review Watteaucentered around this Pierrot, to visit from October 16, 2024 to February 3, 2025. The painting of Watteau is of course at the centre of this tour, but it is not the only masterpiece in this collection. You can admire several paintings by the painter and his contemporaries, as well as paintings, photographs and drawings from more recent periods. In total, these are 65 works which are exhibited at the Louvre Museum, including seven paintings by Watteau.

Pierrot was born in the comic theaterAlongside Harlequin, Pierrot is a recurring character in the commedia dell’arte. Fascinated by this theatrical universe from an early age, Watteau painted several scenes and portraits inspired by live performance. However, it is unknown when the painter created his Pierrot. The origins of this painting remain mysterious, and this adds to the legend of this fascinating work.

Over time, Pierrot disappears from French theater, but his image remains. Watteau’s representation imposes itself as model for painters and artists, and the Pierrot codes are found in new characters, like the “Gilles”, a valet in a white suit who takes the place of Pierrot in the new plays of the 18th century.

Century after century, Watteau’s masterpiece continues to inspire painters, but also the writers, THE playwrights or the actors and actors. We see characters dressed all in white, thinkers or poets, flourishing in art. The Louvre Museum shows through this exhibition the importance that Watteau’s Pierrot can still have on our imagination. The mime Marceau or the film Children of Paradisefor example, derive their inspiration of this character made immortal by the French painter.

As a counterpoint to this melancholic Pierrot, the Louvre Museum is at the same time presenting an exhibition on Figures of the madman.
