King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia offered a state banquet to their Finnish guests on Tuesday April 23. The Swedish royal family surrounded the Swedish sovereigns at this dinner in honor of Finnish President Alexander Stubb and his wife. Princess Sofia had a big surprise in store, wearing a brand new variation of her wedding tiara.

Princess Sofia at the state banquet in honor of Finnish President Alexander Stubb
President Alexander Stubb and First Lady Suzanne Innes made their first day of state visit to the neighboring Kingdom of Sweden on April 23, 2024. After being welcomed by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden at the Royal Palace , the Finnish presidential couple visited the authorities in the Swedish capital. In the evening, as is tradition, the King and Queen of Sweden offered a state banquet to their guests.

Queen Silvia of Sweden wore Queen Louise’s imposing tiara for the occasion. Crown Princess Victoria wore the Boucheron laurel leaf tiara and Princess Sofia wore her usual wedding tiara. Princess Sofia, 39, wife of Prince Carl Philip, usually wears only the tiara she received in 2015 from her in-laws on the occasion of her wedding. This Tuesday evening, however, Princess Sofia decided to mark the occasion, by offering a unique variation to her tiara.

Princess Sofia wears nine new dark stones on her wedding tiara
Princess Sofia’s palmette tiara is a piece of jewelry that she received from her future in-laws on the occasion of her marriage to Prince Carl Philip in 2015. This tiara was made in the greatest secrecy, based on from a necklace that Queen Silvia received from a Thai prince. The necklace was sent back to Thailand, to its designer, to transform it into a tiara. We have never been able to find out what the original necklace looked like, nor what parts of it were used.

The day Sofia Hellqvist became princess of Sweden by marrying the sovereigns’ son, Sofia wore nine emeralds which top each of the nine palm leaves. The relatively simple tiara takes up this very popular and very frequent motif of palmettes, stylized palm leaves.
To adapt her tiara to her clothing style and to give it another appearance depending on the circumstances, Princess Sofia changes the precious stones as she wishes. We have already seen the palmette tiara topped with emeralds, turquoise but also large pearls or diamonds. For the very first time, Princess Sofia wore her tiara topped with dark, briolette-sized stones.
