Art Basel 2024: cabinets of curiosities in the collections of the Eugène Delacroix museum

Contemporary art is in the spotlight at the Eugène Delacroix Museum during the week of the Art Basel 2024 fair. This year, from October 16 to 28, artist Ali Cherry immerses us in her cabinets of curiosities.

THE Eugène Delacroix Museum is, as its name suggests, dedicated to the romantic painter Eugène Delacroix. However, this little-known museum does not just exhibit the works of the 19th-century French artist. Every year, on the occasion of the international contemporary art fairIn autumn, the Delacroix Museum welcomes young artists from all over the world.

This year, from October 16 to 28, 2024, it is the artist Ali Cherri which is in the spotlight. As part of the programming “outside the walls” of the fair Art Basel Paristhe Lebanese artist immerses us in his world which mixes art and history through poignant works.

Inspired by archaeological discoveries, the treasures of the past revealed, but also by the violence suffered by populations and the way in which people move, evolve and endure, Ali Cherry imagines hybrid works. Beings with mixed origins, with shared histories, who speak of both the past and the present.

These sculptures are exhibited at the Delacroix Museum, in the form of curiosities highlighted among the paintings of the French painter. A strange and poetic dialogue is thus created between the two artists.

For three years, the fair Art Basel Paris has the mission of honoring the French and international contemporary artiststhanks to the grand salon organized at the Grand Palais, but also through exhibitions, installations or performances that transform Paris into an open-air museum.
