Saturday night, two former Pitt basketball stars shined in an NBA game.
In the exciting game between the New York Knicks and the Washington Wizards, former Pitt Panthers Bub Carrington and Justin Champagnie shined for the Wizards. The game went into overtime, with the Knicks winning 136-132 against the Wizards in Washington.
Champagnie dropped a career-high 31 points for the Wizards, hitting 13 of his 15 attempts from the field and five of his six three-pointers. He also grabbed ten rebounds in the double-double.
Carrington scored 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting, also adding five rebounds and five assists.
Carrington started 33 games for Pitt as a freshman, averaging 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. The Baltimore, Maryland native shot 41 percent from the field and 32 percent from three-point range in his freshman campaign, and alongside Jaland Lowe and Ishmael Leggett, played for the Panthers in the backcourt.
Carrington went 14th overall in the most recent NBA draft, moving from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Washington Wizards via trade. Carrington was the first player drafted in the first round by a Jeff-Capel-led Pitt team.
Champagnie played two seasons at Pitt from 2019-21, earning All-ACC honors in 2020-21. He started 46 games during his Panther career, averaging 14.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game during his college career. During his brilliant sophomore campaign, Champagnie averaged 18 points and 11.1 rebounds per game in 20 games. He went undrafted by Pitt, but has now been a part of several NBA teams and has also shined in the NBA G-League.
