Since the weekend of October 12, 2024, the “comet of the century” has been delighting the photographers professionals and amateurs alike. Sunday October 13, the conditions were perfect in to see the comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (or C/2023 A3) with the naked eye or to immortalize it. And Florian Clément did not miss the meeting from the Pilat dune.

Specializing in photos of weather phenomena, the 26-year-old Girondin couldn’t resist venturing into astrophotographie. “The comet touches the sky, it looks good in photos and it’s not often that we have such intense comets,” he confides to Bordeaux news a few days later.

From the Pilat dune

“I went a little before the sunset on the dune,” explains the amateur photographer. On site until 9:30 p.m., he took around “a hundred” photos that evening.

A place he particularly appreciates for such moments. “It’s a beautiful landscape, there aren’t too many footprints. It’s a bon site d’observation and we see 360 degrees.”

Sunday, there are a few people when he arrives on the dune. Then equipped with his SLR, his lenses and his tripod, Florian does not hesitate to walk towards the south to find more solitude and be able to take photos without anyone.

Since then, the weather and the cloudy sky have not (yet) allowed him to return there. “The comet is losing brightness, it will be more difficult to see it with the naked eye but it is still possible in photos. If the sky clears, I’ll go back this weekend”, underlines the photographer.

“A diversity of weather phenomena”

Originally from Teich, he lives between his town and Mérignac where he is a technician for Météo . “In Gironde, we have a diversity of phenomena weather thanks to the influence of the earth, the ocean…”, he enthuses.

However, it was in the Vosges that his passion for weather photography was born. “I photographed my first storm when I was a teenager on vacation. I really liked the concept of immortalizing the event,” recalls Florian Clément. “A flash only lasts a few seconds, but thanks to photography we can prolong this moment. »

Since then, he travels for “weather events exceptional, not small storms.” Sometimes it means being a little scared. “We are careful but zero risk does not exist, even at home. »
