Until Sunday May 19, 2024, the Poses Inland Boat Association is exhibiting around forty paintings, but also sketches by Marcel Niquet, at the Foyer du Nivernais in Poses (Eure), near Val-de-Reuil. The artist, a contemporary of the Impressionists, left his mark on the history of the village.

All Posiens know his name: Marcel Niquet, he was a figure in this village of 1,100 inhabitants. Born in 1888 and died in 1968, the painter sketched, along the way, the faces of his neighbors, the scenes of life, the landscapes of the banks of the Seine which he particularly liked.

On a notebook, with a few pencil lines, on postcards, in watercolor, or on a stretcher, in oil: prolific, he is said to have signed some 2,200 works.

Marcel Niquet was born in Poses to a baker father, in a family of 6 children. Educated, he picked up his pencils and brushes very early, learned alongside a passing painter and frequented artists from the School of Rouen.

His first exhibition, held in 1909 in the City of a Hundred Bell Towers, was a great success.

Almost all Posiens have paintings by Marcel Niquet.

Imbued by the Seine and its meanders, in love with his village of which he was even a municipal councilor for thirty years, the artist captures moments of life: the village funfair, the boatmen near the locks of Amfreville-sous-les- Mountains, walkers… but also, in watercolor or charcoal, the faces of his neighbors and friends.

Marcel Niquet, he was a character“, summarizes Gilles Labrouche, president of the Poses Inland Shipping Association.

He had a gift for capturing the characters of the village, with great kindness and sometimes, a slightly naughty eye. He managed to grasp people’s faults and captured faces in a remarkable way.

The retrospective, proposed by the Poses Inland Boat Association, opens a wider cycle of exhibitions, “Landscapes of the Seine in Poses”, in collaboration with the associations Dans le Sens de Barge and Les Amis de l’église de Saint -Quentin. The program is available on the Boat Museum website.

In parallel with Normandy Impressionist, you will be able to participate, until July 31, in guided tours of the village of Poses, the boats and the church, but also discover, during your walks, works on the Amers , maritime landmarks used by boatmen.
