“Seeing that I am the most listened to artist in Belgium for the 5th time while I have not released an album for several years motivates me for the album that I am currently preparing”, enthused Damso on Monday, dressed all in black, glasses and bandana on his head, facing a hand-picked audience of journalists and students.

If the rapper that France envies us had come to honor the prize – the Ultratop Streaming Award – given to him, representing 42 million streams over the year 2023 (for 507 streams on the platforms since 2016) – he also wanted to take the opportunity to send a message to young people: believe in your passion and in yourself. “Here, someone will say directly to themselves: ‘If I don’t succeed, there’s no point in me doing it’. However, passion gives life completely, you can be a lawyer, you can be a garbage collector and keep your passion. And I believe that if there were structures that helped to make various passions vibrate, it would be interesting to go beyond success to just love what we really do. And that’s something I don’t really find in Europe. In Belgium, where I was, when I talked about rap they told me: “you’re not going to succeed, it’s useless”. And I asked myself: ‘yes, but if I still want to do it, what should I do then?’. There is something to take care of on that side…”

I am not trying to gain loyalty from anyone or to be faithful…”

DamsoSuperstar rapper

Damso stood up to some to build this already long career that many envy him. “I experienced a significant media lynching and yet my Belgian public always followed and supported me.” His journey may inspire many, but the rapper defends himself: “But I’m not a model, you can stay with me if you like, but it’s not a role (…) I don’t intend to be inspiring and I think you can be inspiring despite yourself. This is why I talk about honesty with oneself: I am an open book in a library available to everyone. You come and take what you have to take. If there are things that can inspire, so much the better. And there are other people who won’t be interested and they will move on. But I don’t intend to inspire more than that. If he were to be an example, it would be “honest”, he says, with himself.

Besides, he smiles, “I’m not looking to retain anyone’s loyalty. Nor be faithful to anyone… I think some women can attest to this unfortunately! But I am more true to myself and I believe that it is this link that I have with the public in the sense that it is more human, beyond the music.”
