Stopping of Des Chiffres et des lettres after 52 years: Laurent Romejko reacts with “sadness” and reveals how he learned it

If he revealed in The Sunday Tribune (May 5) that The Health Magazine would finally make its comeback on France 5 with a new formula, Stéphane Sitbon-Gomez (the director of antennas and programs at France Télévisions) announced that a cult show was stopping on France 3. After fifty-two years of antenna, Numbers and letters will bow out. Passing through Media culture on Europe 1, this Monday May 6, 2024, Laurent Romejko reacted to this information.

The weekend programming Numbers and letters was not crowned with success. After fifty years of existence, it is an emblematic meeting. It’s a difficult decision, but we have chosen to stop this program“, confided Stéphane Sitbon-Gomez to The Sunday Tribune. Thus, it is a beautiful and long adventure which ends for Laurent Romejko, who presented the game show since 1992. But the 60-year-old presenter admitted that it was not a real surprise to see the program canceled.

An end predicted by Laurent Romejko

It’s an ending that we’ve been predicting for two yearssince the transition from weekdays to weekends. Maybe it’s not disappointment but sadnesshe admitted on the airwaves of Europe 1 before mentioning the “record longevity” of the show. It is therefore difficult to cope with the cessation of Numbers and letters. “There is emotion at the announcement of this judgment. It’s a UFO in the PAF. It’s a very silent show, with its gimmicks, with its famous ding-dong at the end, its consonant/vowel gimmicks. It’s a show that has its enthusiasts, but which was unlike any other“, he continued. But with the Parisian, Laurent Romejko assured that the team had been warned a few days ago. And he wanted to emphasize this, because this is not always the case in this environment. Some presenters learn of the termination of their program in the media: “This is not at all what happened for us. There were discussions, things were done normally, properly. It’s boring, but there are more serious things in life“, he clarified.

It is obviously a professional page that is turning for Laurent Romejko, because this experience has allowed him to grow: “After, for two years, when we moved to weekend programming, we felt that there was a drop in performance. We knew we wouldn’t still be here in 50 years. It’s a long story that’s coming to an end, we were the oldest show on French television behind Le Jour du Seigneur, we’ll have to see who gets the trophy“, he put it into perspective.

It will be at the end of July that the last of Numbers and letters. For the occasion, producer Patrice Laffont (who was also in charge of the game and who reacted to the stopping of the program) and Laurent Romejko will be reunited. A show that already promises to be very moving.
