King Felipe relives his swearing-in, 40 years later

On October 7, 2023, Princess Leonor, Princess of Asturias, confirmed her commitment to the Spanish Armed Forces, taking the oath to follow the Constitution, remain faithful to the King and give her life for the defense of Spain. Taking the oath is a mandatory step for all new cadets at the General Military Academy of Zaragoza, after their first weeks of training. After taking the oath, each new cadet kisses the flag.

This ceremony is still fresh in the mind of the heir to the throne. For his father, King Felipe, the memory is more distant. He also went through the General Military Academy of Zaragoza, in Aragón. At the time, the heir to the throne took the oath and kissed the flag in a ceremony held especially for him. Felipe was sworn in on October 11, 1985, then he joined the 45th promotion of the Academy in December of that same year. However, due to the program designed for him, Felipe graduated as a lieutenant from the academy, at the same time as the 44th promotion, whose cadets had taken the oath in 1984.

With his former classmates, King Felipe relived this very engaging ceremony. King Felipe kissed the flag. More than 25,000 new cadets have already embraced this flag which is more than 130 years old. The Academy flag was commissioned by Queen Marie-Christine, widow of King Alphonse XII. It was made by Spanish artists using traditional embroidery methods. It was delivered in 1886 to the Alcázar of Toledo, where the headquarters of the General Military Academy was located at the time.
