La Gacilly-Baden 2024: Pascal Maître

For more than 40 years, Pascal Maitre has traveled the world as a photojournalist. After a childhood spent in Berry, he trained in photography, a passion that he has continued to cultivate ever since. These photographic reports, often the result of press commissions, take us to the four corners of the world and particularly to West Africa.

Until October 15, the “Métropolis” series, by Pascal Maitre, is exhibited in the streets of Baden (Austria) during the La Gacilly-Baden photography festival. These photos show, in an approach oscillating between street photography and a documentary style, the excitement of these cities with millions of inhabitants.

Ever bigger cities

According to UN forecasts, two out of three inhabitants will live in cities. If for several centuries, cities have continued to grow in population and expand, today they must be built with climate risk in mind. Environmental preservation, food sovereignty, concentration of resources: we cannot think of the cities of tomorrow without adapting them to the consequences of global warming.

Ever more vertical cities

To accommodate their new populations, cities are spreading out and stretching ever higher. Pascal Maitre’s photographs show these inhabitants swarming around these immense buildings. Urban landscapes are being built and large cities are appearing, particularly in Africa, becoming the urban centers of tomorrow.

In a colorful aesthetic, Pascal Maitre captures the soul of these cities and those who inhabit them. Day and night, the photographer visits lively neighborhoods: one look is enough to hear the story of these photographs: the noise, the hustle and bustle, the encounters… “Metropolis” breathes life!
