ADAGP and its support fund for photographers

Between portraits of artists, recording of works or research time, the ADAGP Support Fund supports the professional development and structuring of its members by deploying grants adapted to their needs.

In 2021, ADAGP (French society for the collection and distribution of copyright in the field of graphic and plastic arts), SAIF (collective copyright management organization) and Google announced an agreement intended “to support and remunerate visual arts authors in the digital context” and, in particular, photographers. Signed for ten years, it ratified the creation of a Fund for artist members of ADAGP and SAIF, with the aim of supporting their professionalization, development and digital deployment (in particular via a licensing program for the use in of works from the ADAGP and SAIF repertoire in various Google products and services).

The ADAGP Fund created by this agreement aims to meet a range of specific needs of photographers and image creators. Whether it is to finance artistic research time, to create video or photo portraits of the artist, to enable the cataloguing of works or even to make a video recording of an artistic performance, six categories of endowments from €1,500 to €6,000 demonstrate a desire to support the profession, its professionalization, its communication and its structuring.

2.5 million euros in grants last year

A new ADAGP commission created for the occasion meets twice a year, in the spring and autumn, with the mission of processing grant applications, ensuring that the diversity of artistic disciplines and the specific needs of creators are represented. In 2023, 634 grants were awarded for a total of 2.5 million euros.

For this new session, ADAGP members have until November 12 to submit their applications, with the exception of the “Artistic Research Time” allocation, which will close once 450 complete applications have been submitted.

Supporting artists in the digital age

Beyond the financial aspect, this fund illustrates a commitment to the sustainability of the visual arts in France, as Marie-Anne Ferry-Fall, general director of ADAGP, recalled following the agreement reached with Google: ” This demonstrates, once again, that creation, digital technology and copyright can be understood and combined, for the greatest benefit of all.” By supporting artistic creation while facilitating the digital transition of photographers, ADAGP and Google allow artists to focus on their creative work, while ensuring that their work finds its place in the digital landscape.
